What government response to the popularity of non-conventional medicine? (Policy Brief 290 - October 2012)

02/10/12

Faced with the side effects of treatment, lack of time caregivers or the absence of effective remedies to the ills of daily users of health systems in developed countries are increasingly turning to unconventional medicine (eg traditional medicine Chinese or homeopathy), yet little recognized by science or the medical community.

  •  What government response to the popularity of non-conventional medicine?

The seal between conventional and unconventional care is also not complete. These are increasingly included in the practice of health professionals or refunded. Meanwhile, users often use therapists or doctors or allied health professionals practicing in the limit for the care and well-being.

This trend is not well known in France, although the growing market of medicinal plants and demand - more informed - unconventional care in neighboring countries suggest that the number of French using these practices is significant. Some are worried, considering unconventional methods ineffective or even dangerous. Others argue instead that these medicines may be useful in the field of prevention of chronic disease and pain, even in case of failure of conventional medicine. These therapies may also contribute to a reduction in drug consumption and a more holistic approach to health and life course.

Given the risks and potentials associated with increased joint supply and demand for non-conventional medicines, a government action seems necessary. On the one hand, it should ensure the safety of these techniques and supervise the practice and training of therapists. On the other hand, it would organize the integration of these medicines in the health system where they can contribute, in addition to conventional care, to care for patients more fully.
