  • The curiosity of October: Switzerland

In Switzerland , now, men will take the name of their wife. Indeed, the State Council has just adopted a reform of the free choice of surname of a newly married couple, with an objective of gender equality. So far, the civil code did match the husband's name and last name and did not give the wife the right to keep their name and that of her husband. With this reform, each spouse may keep her maiden name or choose one of two surnames as a common family name. As children, they carry the common surname or, if each parent has kept his maiden name, family name defined by the spouses during their first year of marriage.
