Working Paper No. 6: Employment and business migrants

Working Paper No. 6: Employment and business migrants

11/03/12

Immigrants are traditionally in a more fragile condition of employment under the French-born because of the obstacles they encounter on the job market.

This vulnerability (higher unemployment, lower labor force participation) is essentially the work of immigrants from third countries (outside EU) and of these women.

Positions less skilled than other workers born in France or elsewhere in the EU, immigrants from third countries (but also Portugal) are also highly concentrated in certain sectors (construction, hôtellerierestauration, services cleaning and security, personal and domestic services) and in certain manual trades benefiting from low prestige in the scale of social representations (unskilled workers, cleaners ...).

Trades immigrants are highly segmented by gender, women with a specialization in human services and men in the building trades. Their vulnerability and sectoral concentration or trades, varying by ethnicity, however, diminishes with rising educational level of migrants, tensions in certain skilled workforce (health IT) and / or in some employment areas (Ile de France) but also and especially with the different waves. In this regard, the concentration by sector is much less pronounced among immigrants from Italy, Spain and North Africa than among native of China, Turkey or in sub-Saharan France arrived more recently.
