What role should social entrepreneurship have in France? (Policy Brief 268 - March 2012)

06/03/12

Social Entrepreneurship aims to combine economic efficiency and social impact and is gaining more and more interest. In the past two years, major initiatives haven been taken in this sector: launching the Social Innovation Fund in the U.S., creating the “Big Society” in the United Kingdom and the European Commission introducing the Social Business Initiative.

  • What role should social entrepreneurship have in France?

The boundries of social entrepreneurship remain unclear, but we choose to focus on examples of good practices and proven experiences. Social enterprisesb innovate and can provide appropriate responses to social needs that are poorly covered. They are also sources for sustainable jobs. The main challenges for these companies depend on whether or not they are able to expand.

They face three challenges in trying to do this: better demonstrate their economic and social impact, diversify their funding sources, and better interact with "classic" economies. Governments play a key role in creating an environment conducive to their development.
