Policy Brief 299 - Bacteria resistant to antibiotics

15/11/12

The Centre for Strategic Analysis (CAS) has published an analysis note formulating proposals

Bacteria resistant to antibiotics

France is the third largest consumer of antibiotics in human medicine for Europe and even ranks in second place in the veterinary field.

The irrational use of antibiotics leads today to a dangerous health situation. Indeed, we are witnessing an accelerated development of bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Increasing the number of multi-resistant bacteria (BMR), insensitive to most or all available antibiotics, is especially feared a return to the pre-antibiotic era, the human and economic costs are already very high.

In the European Union, it is estimated that at least 25,000 patients die each year from infection with one of the five multi-resistant bacteria most frequently. Moreover, the overhead in terms of health expenditure and productivity losses due to deaths and diseases are extensions valued at more than € 1.5 billion per year in the EU.

If progress were observed in France thanks to several public awareness campaigns , the preservation effects of antibiotics requires a strengthened and more comprehensive . To do this, the CAS sends four proposals:

1. Promote coordination by the World Health Organization (WHO) global network monitoring and alerting multi-resistant bacteria.

2. Rationalizing prescribing of antibiotics in humans:

  • each year by sending all their medical profile of antibiotic prescribing;
  • supporting the creation of interregional centers consulting antibiotics and strengthening the role of the doctor in the hospital antibioréférent;
  • encouraging research into new diagnostic tests rapid orientation.

3. Drastically reduce the use of antibiotics critical to human animal, either by voluntary commitments of all sectors, either by statutory prohibitions.

4. Develop our armamentarium:

  • strengthening public support for research on the long-term antibacterial and new ways to prevent infections;
  • clarifying the regulatory status of phage therapy and establishing a research program to evaluate its therapeutic potential.
