Policy Brief 219 - "Cross-curricular competencies" and "transferable skills": skills that facilitate professional mobility (April 2011)

Contents

  •   Transversal and transferable skills: what do we speak? What connection with professional mobility?
  •   Issues identification skills and linking supply and labor demand
  •   Acquisition issues and skills certification

Transversal and transferable skills are two concepts often confused in public debate. The former are generic (directly related to basic skills and behavioral skills, cognitive or organizational). The second are attached to professional situations but can be implemented in other industries or professions.

Better understood, identified and reported, all of these skills could help to facilitate professional mobility and secure career paths.

The discussions today focused on cross-curricular competencies should not obscure the importance of specific skills transferable.

We can identify several issues: the identification and reporting skills, their acquisition and certification, support for workers and companies.

Tools to identify those skills and experiences of support for employees, job seekers and businesses are many. The uses are varied, but not always known of all the structures for this question. The acquisition devices or certification of generic skills have expanded and seamless, but there is room for improvement, especially to vulnerable employees.
