How to encourage as many to participate in sport or physical activity? (April 2011)

Contents:

  • The sport of French: an overview
  • What are the incentives most likely to respond to changing needs and atttentes?

With a rate of sport at least weekly by 48% in adolescents and adults, France is the European average. Despite widespread democratization for over a century, the sport remains subject to many discriminatory as income, qualifications, age, gender and territory. If it is primarily the result of recreational and individual choice, it is nonetheless a collective issue, just like physical activity - which includes forms of exercise such as commuting, housework, even some aspects of professional activity.
So are they both now the subject of increasing attention of public actors (sports ministry, local authorities, EU) and private (federations, clubs, businesses ). Sport and physical activity, however, seem to have to meet increasingly demanding expectations, which may appear paradoxical at times. Independently of the pleasure they provide, they are expected to contribute to social relations, prevent the development of certain diseases and work to improve the welfare of individuals, including in the workplace.

Their virtues can be idealized to the point where some evoke the risk of exploitation.

  •   The range of sports, in France, is it suitable for mass non-competitive practice?
  •   What incentives are most effective in practice by all, a sport or physical activity?
  •   Does it affect the demand and, if so, how?
  •   What types of actors who should act and how to reconcile public policy goals and respect for individual preferences?
  •   Author: Marie-Cecile Naves, Department of Social Affairs.
