The medical device innovation. France's attractiveness and development of the sector (Policy Brief 295 - October 2012)

23/10/12

Sector of the medical device (DM) is the strategic global market size (more than 200 billion euros per year) and growth (about 6% per year). France has a high quality medicine, internationally recognized and dynamism in terms of innovation (many technological breakthroughs in the field of medical device are of French origin: artificial heart, minimally invasive surgery, etc.).

  • The medical device innovation. France's attractiveness and development of the sector

Unfortunately, the French industrial sector, for it is creative, is hampered by several factors:

  • technology transfer from basic research to industry is inefficient;
  • innovations are regularly captured (acquisition of start-up, etc..) by large companies with foreign capital, in the absence of major French companies in the sector and private investors willing to finance small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in their stages of development;
  • the process of management of medical devices by health insurance is sometimes very long and expensive, but also very predictable;
  • little training actually put in contact engineers, contractors and medical world in order to promote the economic development of innovative medical devices from the identified clinical needs "on the ground".

As a result, little innovation benefits the French industry, highly fragmented (more than 1000 SMEs), which has only a small number of medium-sized companies (ETI 250 to 5000 employees) and large companies (over 5,000 employees). Encourage and support innovation, including the establishment of appropriate funding, streamline administrative processes for registration of medical devices, develop appropriate training are all paths to continue to increase the attractiveness of France for business of innovative medical device.
