An active grandparenthood (Policy brief 199 - November 2010)

19/11/10

An active grandparenthood, a triple challenge : work-life balance, solidarity, employment of the seniors

Contents:

  •   Grandparenthood active: a revival of intergenerational solidarity additional public solidarity.
  •   Older: a new player to consider for the reconciliation of family / work life.

Longer life expectancy gives seniors an increasing role in the intergenerational solidarity, which is not without changing the roles of family, public and private sector. In terms of solidarity upward, public policies are structured to support caregivers of dependent caregivers of seniors). Thoughts are but the smaller down on family solidarity, while the large-parental care (grandparents keep their grandchildren) is using the most regular intergenerational.
In France, it accounts for a weekly schedule of order of 23 million hours, equivalent to that of childminders 1 . Grand-parental custody plays an important role in the reconciliation of family / professional lives of adult children of seniors, complementary collective childcare. It concerns a large number of active seniors (about 30% of 55-59 year olds are grandparents and employment) 2 .

However, with increasing potential careers, will arise more acutely the problem of balancing work / off work for senior citizens, mobilized by helping their parents and their grandchildren. The "grand-parenting active" (active seniors grandparents keep their grandchildren) might seem marginal in terms of senior employment issues. But it fits well with timetable adjustments devices recently developed by businesses to promote and extend the employment of seniors.

The state could support the role of the employer in terms of timetable adjustments throughout life to promote intergenerational solidarity in the heart of our pension system.
